Discovering the Future of Fashion and Textiles: My Global Experience in China

From August 22 to 31, I had the incredible opportunity to visit China as part of a global experience trip focused on exploring arts and culture. My journey took me to the bustling cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Suzhou, key hubs in the fashion and textile industry. The primary objective of this trip was to deepen my understanding of China’s vast textile industry, explore sustainable textile technologies, and gain insight into the country’s consumer market dynamics—all while reflecting on my future career path in fashion.

China’s status as a global leader in textile production and its shift toward sustainability and technology-driven practices made it the ideal destination for career exploration. I set out with clear goals: to explore different career possibilities, from textile manufacturing to launching a designer brand, and to experience firsthand the cultural and artistic forces that shape China’s fashion landscape.

Understanding the Textile Industry & Exploring Sustainable Technology

The textile industry in China is vast, and my trip allowed me to explore it in depth, starting in Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po Fabric Market and continuing through Shanghai’s Intertextile Expo. One of the most significant takeaways was witnessing China's ongoing shift toward sustainability. I was introduced to eco-friendly fabrics like Tencel, recycled materials, and innovations such as waterless dyeing and 3D scanning technology for garment production. These developments confirmed the rising importance of sustainability in fashion—a focus I am passionate about integrating into my future work.

Meeting with Mr.Ryan Wong at the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textile and Apparel (HKRITA) was a pivotal moment, where I learned about garment recycling technologies that can be applied to promote more sustainable consumption. Attending exhibitions like the CHIC Expo and Yarn Expo in Shanghai further opened my eyes to how China is embracing sustainable practices on a large scale.

Exploring Market Dynamics & Consumer Behavior

Understanding market dynamics was another crucial aspect of this trip. From high-end designer markets in Shanghai’s Huaihai Road to wholesale markets like Lai Chi Kok in Hong Kong, I observed the diverse range of consumer preferences and business models within China’s fashion industry. These insights helped me better grasp how brands position themselves across luxury, wholesale, and emerging designer segments.

I was particularly intrigued by how emerging designers in China are pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion while responding to the local demand for creative, high-quality products. Experiencing the competitive landscape of the Chinese market firsthand made me realize how vital it is to adapt design concepts to local consumer behaviors while maintaining a global perspective.

Art, Culture, and Creativity

China’s rich cultural heritage also played a significant role in shaping my experience. From visits to creative hubs like K11 Musea in Hong Kong to exploring Suzhou’s famous silk factories and traditional gardens, I saw firsthand how art, history, and fashion are deeply intertwined. My journey through Shanghai’s M50 Art District and visits to museums such as the Shanghai Costume and Textile Museum further emphasized the importance of understanding the past to create forward-thinking designs. A last-minute visa issue resulted in a change of plans, giving me extra time in Guangzhou, where I was able to dive deeper into market research and textile sourcing. This experience reminded me of the importance of flexibility in navigating international business challenges.

Moreover, my language skills in Chinese proved invaluable, enabling me to guide my classmates through complex markets and cultural sites. This reinforced my belief in the importance of cultural and linguistic understanding in a globalized industry.
